What do the initials PBH stand for?Peter Buckley Hill, Free Fringe founder and the recipient of the coveted 2009 Panel Prize at the Edinburgh Comedy Awards. When did the Free Fringe start? The genesis of the Free Fringe came in 1996 when Peter Buckley Hill ran the first free entry comedy show, Peter Buckley Hill and Some Comedians. Since then PBH's Free Fringe has expanded to venues and shows all over the city of Edinburgh. What is the Free Fringe ethos? The Free Fringe provides venues free to performers and shows free to enter for the public. PBH's Free Fringe continues to be the only not-for-profit, performer led space on the Fringe. Everyone in PBH's Free Fringe pulls together to provide equipment and volunteer their time and skills for administration and organisation - with no hidden costs to the performer. What sort of shows does PBH's Free Fringe have? This year you can see comedy, theatre, spoken word, cabaret shows and intellectual discussion shows at venues around Edinburgh. You can expect to see both up-and-coming performers and established and household names. Every show is quality controlled to ensure they meet the high standards expected by a Fringe audience. Where are the shows? This year there are PBH's Free Fringe shows in nightclubs, pubs and bars around the city. See the venue page for details. How many PBH's Free Fringe shows are there in 2010?Over 3000. Some are running for the entire length of the Fringe Festival, some for just a week or two and some just for individual one-off performances. All the shows are listed on the programme page. When is PBH's Free Fringe?August 7 to 27 in most venues except for The Canons' Gait where shows run until August 28. There are shows throughout the day in most venues. Do I have to put money in the buckets? It's up to you. The performers do not have to pay for the venues, but they still pay for everything else involved in the shows (flyers, entry in the main Fringe Festival book, accommodation etc). If you have enjoyed the shows then please consider putting money in the collection buckets afterwards! |
